Au Revoir Simone – Daytrotter Session

Readers of this site might notice that I mention Au Revoir Simone now and again (and again).  They might also notice that I love me some Daytrotter.  Imagine, therefore, my immense pleasure at bringing you the news that Au Revoir Simone stopped by Daytrotter for a second session (the first one’s here), and that it’s ready for your listening pleasure.  This time, the tracks are all from their most recent album: Still Night, Still Light.  The performances feature the band’s playful vivacity, and capture the off-the-cuff feel they bring to their concert performances. Just the thing to get your Spring moving in the right direction…

Now Playing: March 18th, 2010

Sometimes, it’s important to refuel.  I have some albums that I slip on every day, and they fit like my favorite pair of jeans.  I will never, ever get tired of hearing R.E.M.’s Life’s Rich Pageant, or Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins.  That’s just how it is.  I don’t necessarily look for them every day, but they always find their way back to me.  Of course, which albums stick around the house for a while is really up to the season.  Sun Kil Moon works better in Fall and Winter, and The B-52’s are a Summer band.  That’s life.

But for all of this, it’s important to keep bringing in the new.  Music affords us one of the few, endless adventures in life.  There are so many bands – doing so very many things – that there will never be time for it all.  You like Indie Rock, do you?  Well, there are thousands of bands you have never heard of.  No matter how hip.  There’s someone, at this moment, doing something in a garage that’s going to be your next favorite song.  Shouldn’t everything be like that?  It’s awesome, and it’s the reason I’m here on this here website.

So, in this quasi-weekly installment, I’m going to share with you some of the amazing things that have come to me… well, since the last time I wrote this thing.  As this is the first time, let’s stick with March.  Some of this will be new, and some old, but hopefully it will all be awesome.  Let’s get started… if you’ll just follow me:

Lissie – Why You Runnin’ EP

I might have missed the release of her debut EP – “Why You Runnin'” – back in November, but I’m definitely trying to make up for lost time with Lissie.  From her soulful cover of “Wedding Bells” by Hank Williams (Sr) to the lush, aching deep of “Everywhere I Go,” Lissie’s music just makes your breath catch and your world slow down.  It’s a rare enough feeling that I’ve decided not to cloud it with too much exposition.  But if you want a little bit more, here’s an excerpt of Sean Moeller’s biography of Lissie over at Fat Possum’s site:

She lives by herself, with her dog, in a farmhouse in Ojai, Calif., where she tends to drink wine and will, on a whim, go to the store to buy paint for her rocks so she can construct a medicine wheel in her big backyard. She has all the time to listen to what’s happening in her inner chambers, what’s turning on and off her lights, what’s giving her goosebumps and where she thinks she’ll be led tomorrow.

New Video: Au Revoir Simone – “Another Likely Story”

From their twitter page comes the news that the world’s most adorable keyboard trio – Au Revoir Simone – has released a video for “Another Likely Story.”  The video was shot in New York and is directed by Christopher Kucinski.  In keeping with the fashion of their other videos (Fallen Snow, for example), the video features the trio hanging out and playfully enjoying their own company.  If you’re in need of just a bit more lightness in your day, then have a listen!

Laura Gibson – Daytrotter Session

I’m sure that it’s one of the more common adjectives to describe Laura Gibson, but, nonetheless, there’s something truly haunting about this Oregonian’s music.  From her debut album If You Come to Greet Me to her superb 2009 effort Beasts of Seasons, Laura has kept me enthralled with each new track.  With its complex depth of emotions, hers is the perfect sort of music to slide into on a lazy Winter’s afternoon, or whenever else you’re feeling contemplative.

Imagine, then, my immense delight at discovering that Daytrotter has posted a collection of six live tracks for listening and download.   You can also find her original session there – with five more tracks to listen to and download.
